What Is an
Arm Lift?

An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, is a popular cosmetic surgery that improves the appearance of the underside portion
of the upper arm. During this procedure, an incision is made on the inside of the arm to remove excess skin and fat. The remaining tissue is then tightened and smoothed to create a more toned look. On average, this surgery takes 1-3 hours to complete, depending
on the extent of corrections and techniques used. It is often conducted as a part of the upper body lift.

Mini Arm Lift

The mini arm lift (limited-incision brachioplasty) is a less invasive procedure that targets mild sagging skin. A small incision is made on the inside of the upper arm near the armpit. Excess skin and fat are removed to create a more toned, contoured appearance. Since it is less invasive, the mini arm lift results in smaller scars than a regular procedure.
A regular arm lift, or brachioplasty, removes excess skin and fat deposits along the upper arms. An incision is made from the armpit area down along the inside of the arm, usually stopping around the elbow. This opening allows Dr. Metzinger to tighten the underlying tissue and remove excess skin to create a more toned appearance. A regular arm lift can treat skin laxity issues that cause moderate to severe sagging – so-called “bat wings.” The resulting scar from a regular arm lift is more visible initially but fades over time.
The extended arm lift is the most invasive arm contouring procedure. Dr. Metzinger makes a long incision from the elbow to the armpit area, extending to the breast skin. This allows the surgeon to remove severe sagging from the upper arms. An extended arm lift enables the most aggressive tightening and contouring of the skin. Due to the length of the incision, this surgery results in a more visible scar that runs the entire length of the upper inner arm.

Consultation & Preparation
for Arm Lift

During the initial consultation, Dr. Metzinger examines each candidate, reviews their medical history, and discusses their aesthetic goals. He also evaluates the amount of excess skin and fat in the upper arms to determine the appropriate technique for removal, which could involve liposuction, brachioplasty, or a combination approach. Additional aspects of preparation include stopping smoking for a month before and after surgery to promote proper healing and recovery, arranging for transportation and any assistance needed in the first few days, and following any instructions regarding eating, drinking, and medication use. Clear communication with Dr. Metzinger and following all guidelines are vital to ensure the best results.

Markings

Before the operation, Dr. Metzinger uses a surgical marker to draw lines in the target areas. In most cases, they look like oval signs around places with loose skin. Markings guide the placement of incisions and indicate the amount of skin and fat to be removed.
The upper arm lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia to maximize comfort and prevent pain. Our skilled anesthesiologist places an IV line to administer fluids and medications. We monitor the patient’s vital signs closely throughout surgery.
The standard incision for a regular upper arm lift goes from the armpit to the elbow. Dr. Metzinger may vary the pattern and size of the cut based on the patient’s needs.
Excess skin, fat, and other tissue are removed through the incisions to reshape the upper arms. The remaining skin is lifted, and the underlying tissues may be repositioned to provide more tone and definition. Liposuction might also be used to remove pockets of fat.
Once the desired contour and shape are achieved, Dr. Metzinger closes the incisions with sutures, skin adhesives, or surgical tape. Small tubes may temporarily be left under the skin to drain fluid buildup. The arms are wrapped in a compression bandage to minimize swelling.

Recovery After Arm Lift Surgery

Week 1

The first week after an arm lift focuses on healing and managing swelling and bruising. Patients wear compression garments to reduce the effect of these symptoms. Pain and discomfort are expected. Patients should take any prescribed medications and follow Dr. Metzinger’s instructions for wound care and activity limitations. Gentle movement is encouraged to promote blood flow, but lifting or straining the arms must be avoided.
During the second week, swelling continues to decrease, and bruises may change color as they start to fade. The discomfort subsides, but patients might still require pain medication. Stitches are removed around 10-14 days after surgery. During this time, arm lift patients may be instructed to start light exercises while avoiding lifting or pushing motions. Dr. Metzinger monitors the recovery process during follow-up appointments.
In the third and fourth weeks, swelling dissipates further, and patients can usually resume non-strenuous daily activities. Discomfort becomes minimal. Scars are still healing and may be pink or red. Patients can generally return to work if it does not involve heavy physical demands. Exercise may gradually ramp up during this time, focusing on flexibility and range of motion. Strength training should still be avoided to allow internal incisions to heal fully. The final results are usually visible after 3-6 months of recovery.

Candidates for Arm Lift Surgery

Potential candidates are patients with loose or hanging skin on their upper arms. This usually happens due to significant weight loss, pregnancy, and aging. Surgery is the only way to tighten the skin that has stretched beyond its capacity to retract. Here are the main groups of candidates who can benefit from an arm lift:
Candidates for Arm lift banner
Those who have lost significant weight either through diet, exercise, or bariatric surgery. The weight loss leaves behind loose skin in the upper arm region.
Individuals who feel self-conscious about their appearance and want
to improve contours.
People with good skin elasticity as it helps the tissues to retract after an arm lift.
Relatively healthy individuals without medical conditions that impair healing. Arm lift surgery requires a recovery period.
Non-smokers or people who can quit it for several weeks before and after the operation. Nicotine affects circulation and may interfere with healing.
