About Breast Lift Banner

What is
Breast Lift

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that aims to reshape the breasts by raising the nipple and areola to a more youthful height. During this operation, excess skin is removed, and the remaining breast tissue is shaped to make it look perkier. A breast lift can reduce sagging and improve breast contours. This procedure typically takes between 2 and 5 hours, depending on the technique used and the patient’s needs.

Breast Sagging With Pencil Test

How to Easily Diagnose
Breast Sagging

With a Pencil Test?

The pencil test can be used by women to determine if they might benefit from a breast lift. The patient places a pencil underneath one breast parallel to the chest. If the pencil falls immediately, the level of sagging is not severe. If it stays in place, then it might be beneficial to seek cosmetic surgery. This test gives women a quick visual indicator of the amount of ptosis (sagging) and whether a breast lift could help improve it.

Techniques

Crescent

The crescent lift involves an incision made along the top of the areola. This allows the surgeon to remove excess skin above the areola and lift the breast tissue. The crescent technique is used for minor sagging.
During the donut lift, an incision is made around the entire areola. This allows the surgeon to remove the skin from that area. The donut lift can improve the breasts more dramatically than a crescent technique.
The lollipop lift (vertical mastopexy) involves a circular incision around the areola and a vertical cut from the bottom of this circle to the crease under the breast. This allows the surgeon to remove significant excess skin, helping to deal with moderate sagging.
The anchor lift, also called an inverted-T lift, extends the lollipop pattern by adding a horizontal incision along the breast crease. This technique is suitable for severe sagging. The anchor-shaped scar is the most visible of the breast lift scars, but it is also the most effective when there is a lot of loose tissue.
Consultation & Preperation Breast Lift Banner

Consultation & Preparation for Breast Lift

Preparation begins with a breast lift consultation, during which Dr. Metzinger reviews the patient’s medical history and conducts a physical examination of the breasts to analyze skin quality, placement of nipples, and degree of sagging. The surgeon discusses the patient’s goals, evaluates their candidacy for surgery, and explains the different techniques available for a breast lift. We may show before-and-after photos from previous patients to provide examples of realistic outcomes.
Preparation for plastic surgery involves the following steps:
Stopping certain medications or supplements that could interfere with anesthesia or healing
Taking mammograms, bloodwork, and other tests
Arranging transportation after the surgery
Taking time off work
Preparing snacks and freezing meals for the recovery period

Anesthesia

On the day of the procedure, Dr. Metzinger uses different anesthesia methods to ensure that the patient remains comfortable. The choice of anesthesia method depends on the patient’s health status and preferences.
Based on the level of sagging, Dr. Metzinger makes one of the four types of incisions: crescent, donut, lollipop, or anchor. Each of these surgical techniques has its strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, Dr. Metzinger uses his expertise to select the approach that minimizes scarring and achieves the necessary improvements.
The surgeon removes the unwanted tissue through the incision. The skin is stretched taut, and all excess tissue is trimmed using a scalpel and surgical scissors.
Dr. Metzinger may reposition the nipple and areola, moving them higher to achieve a more natural and youthful appearance. In this way, breast lift tightens sagging tissues and makes the body look more beautiful.
Dr. Metzinger seals the incisions with traditional (non-dissolvable) sutures since they cause the least disruption to the areola during recovery. He may place a drain to keep the fluids out of the body and prevent seroma. Dr. Metzinger can also provide a prophylactic antibiotic treatment against infection.
Add On Procedure Breast Augmentation Banner

Add-On Procedure:
Breast Augmentation

Many women who undergo a breast lift procedure also decide to have breast augmentation done at the same time. Adding breast implants during a mastopexy can help to further enhance the breasts. The implants are inserted after the tissue has been lifted and shaped. Combining these two breast enhancement surgeries allows us to improve both the shape and fullness of the breasts.
Recovery After Breast Lift Banner

Recovery After Breast Lift Surgery

Immediately after the surgery, patients may feel groggy from anesthesia or sedation, so they need a family member or friend to drive them home. Dr. Metzinger prescribes painkillers to manage discomfort because people experience tenderness, swelling, or bruising. The nipples and areolas may feel numb for several months.
Women need to wear a surgical compression bra for several days and then bandages for the next 1-2 weeks to ensure that their incisions heal properly. Most patients return to normal activity within 7-10 days but avoid strenuous exercise for approximately 6 weeks. The final results are usually visible after 6 months.
