Dr. Metzinger uses advanced techniques to contour the area with maximum safety and minimal downtime. What Is
Neck Liposuction?

Neck liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes stubborn fat deposits under the chin and along the jawline to reshape and contour the neck. It can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. During the procedure, small incisions are made under the chin or behind the ears, through which a thin tube called a cannula is inserted to loosen and suction out the fat. Neck liposuction is not a weight loss procedure – it targets specific areas of localized fat that do not respond to diet or exercise. This surgery creates a more defined, youthful jawline and neck profile when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Metzinger.

Our Liposuction Techniquess

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction with VASER® uses ultrasonic energy to break up and liquefy fat before suctioning it. This allows Dr. Metzinger to remove unwanted tissue more easily and precisely. VASER® technology eliminates fat with less bleeding and bruising compared to traditional liposuction. The ultrasonic energy can also stimulate skin retraction for better body contouring.
Power-assisted liposuction uses a specialized MicroAire PAL® cannula with a dynamic tip that moves back and forth to facilitate fat removal. The powered motion enables Dr. Metzinger to extract fat with less physical effort, allowing for better contouring in fibrous tissues. MicroAire PAL® technology also prevents trauma to the surrounding blood vessels and nerves. There is less bleeding, bruising, and swelling than during traditional liposuction.
Laser-assisted liposuction with SlimLipo® uses laser energy to liquefy fat before it is removed via a small cannula. This technology can coagulate small blood vessels to help minimize bleeding and bruising. The laser’s thermal effect also stimulates collagen production and skin tightening. SlimLipo® allows for a more controlled, selective fat removal with good skin retraction. There is less trauma to the surrounding tissues and a faster recovery.

Preparation for Neck Liposuction

Before undergoing neck liposuction, patients schedule a consultation to determine if this procedure is appropriate for their needs and to address any questions or concerns. During the appointment, our facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Metzinger, evaluates the neck area, skin elasticity, and the amount and location of unwanted fat deposits. He also reviews the patient’s medical history and any medications or supplements they take. If the individual is deemed a good candidate, Dr. Metzinger outlines what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
Key aspects of preparation include:
Stopping smoking for at least 1 month
Avoiding blood-thinning medication and certain supplements
Arranging for transportation on the day of surgery
Stocking up on soft foods and cold compresses to aid in recovery

Neck Liposuction Procedure

A cannula connected to a vacuum device is inserted through the incisions to remove fat deposits. Dr. Metzinger can use the following techniques:

VASER®: Emits ultrasonic energy to break up and liquefy fat for gentle removal.

MicroAire PAL®: Uses a powered cannula with a back-and-forth motion to loosen the fat, which is then suctioned out.

SlimLipo®: Laser energy is delivered through a small cannula to melt fat, which is then removed.

Dr. Metzinger moves the cannula back and forth in a controlled motion to sculpt and contour the neck. As a triple board-certified plastic surgeon, he uses the best techniques to preserve the surrounding tissues and achieve excellent results.
After creating the desired contour, the incisions are closed with absorbable sutures. Steri-Strips or bandages may be applied to cover the treated areas as they heal.
A tumescent solution consisting of saline, epinephrine, and a local anesthetic like lidocaine is injected into the treatment areas. This medication swells the fat, making it firm and easier to remove. Patients can also receive general anesthesia if they prefer this option and have robust health.
Small incisions of about 2-4 mm are made in inconspicuous areas, such as under the chin or behind the ears. These openings provide access to reshape the tissues.

Add-On Procedures

Neck Lift

A neck lift is a cosmetic procedure that addresses signs of aging on the neck, such as excess skin, fat deposits, and bands of muscles that create a “turkey neck” appearance... During this surgery, an incision is made under the chin, and sagging tissues are removed. The underlying muscles are tightened, and loose skin is trimmed away.

A facelift is a cosmetic procedure that addresses signs of facial aging, including jowls, excess skin, wrinkles, and a loss of a well-defined jawline. During this surgery, incisions... can be made in the following areas: in front of the ears; behind the ears; along the hairline near the temples. The skin is separated from the fat and muscle below. Excess fat is trimmed or suctioned. Underlying muscle and connective tissue are tightened with sutures, and loose skin is removed. The incisions are closed with sutures, resulting in a smoother, firmer, and more youthful facial profile with lifted contours.

Recovery After Neck Liposuction Surgery

First 24 Hours
On the first day after neck liposuction, patients experience swelling and bruising around the treatment area. They must rest with their heads elevated on several pillows. Dr. Metzinger prescribes pain medication to manage initial discomfort. Drainage tubes may be placed under the skin to prevent fluid buildup. Patients are advised to have someone available to assist them.
Swelling and bruising peak during the first week following neck liposuction. Pain medication must be taken as directed by Dr. Metzinger. Drainage tubes are typically removed within a few days. Patients should avoid straining the neck and limit physical activity during the first week. A follow-up appointment is scheduled around day 7 to monitor healing. Stitches may be removed at this time.
Swelling and bruising improve significantly within two to four weeks after neck liposuction. The discomfort subsides, and pain medication is generally no longer needed. Most patients return to light activity but should avoid heavy lifting or straining the neck. Some numbness is expected during this time as the sensation slowly returns. Scars begin fading, though they may remain red or pink for several months.
Patients will see the final results take shape as the residual swelling goes down. This may take 3-6 months. Proper scar care can help achieve excellent cosmetic results. Patients might benefit from the following treatments:
  • Silicone sheets and gels
  • Moisturizing ointments and creams
  • Sunscreen
  • Massage therapy
  • Topical retinoids
  • Chemical peels
  • Laser therapy
  • Microneedling

Candidates for This Cosmetic Procedure

A stable body weight is essential for individuals considering neck liposuction. Significant weight fluctuations after surgery can alter the results, potentially leading to uneven contours or fat redistribution. Patients should be at or near their target body mass and maintain it before and after the procedure.
Candidates for neck liposuction must be in good general health and free from any chronic medical conditions that could interfere with healing or increase the risks associated with surgery. Uncontrolled diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and bleeding disorders are common contraindications.
Candidates for neck liposuction procedures typically have an accumulation of fat under the chin, jawline, and neck area, often referred to as a “double chin.” This excess tissue may create an undesired fullness or a lack of definition along the jaw and neckline. Double-chin fat is usually resistant to diet and exercise, making liposuction a necessary treatment.
Individuals with good skin elasticity are ideal candidates for this surgery. Firm, resilient skin can better conform to the new contours after fat removal. Those with sagging skin may not achieve optimal results from liposuction alone and might need additional procedures to address skin laxity.
